Yesterday, I was sitting in my office when I got a message for a request to call back from a phone caller. I dialed the number, I could guess the caller was between 18 to 25 yrs of age. From his hesitation, I could understand that he is actually not sure about the authentication of his question if he is asking a relevant question or not.
I tried to make him comfortable first and then asked the question. He asked,” I came to know that, you people are organizing a “Sufi Musical Evening” on 4th August 2019. I said, “yes, you are correct”. “Are you facing any issue in booking the ticket, then I can help you?
“No”, he said, “I have a different question?”. And then he asked the question, what I was not expecting from a person of his age. He asked, “Well, Is this a religious program? Are you people organizing something related to one religion”? I asked, “What makes you think like this”. He told, “To me, the Sufi musical program means something relates to a religion.” To conclude its eagerness, I simply asked him, “What happened when you listen to music at home, do you start following the religion of the singer?”. He answered, “No”, I again told him, ” To be judgemental to early is not good and if you are coming to our Musical Program, remember only one thing that MUSIC does not have religion. It airs across the border without bounding”.
The conversation finished with a satisfying note, but I got a feeling that it is very common, these types of questions are prevailing in the mind of people all over the world, at least of this age of people, who are confused in these jumbled words like “Religion”, “Spiritualism”, “Sufi”. But somehow they are not asking these questions to the right person either they are trying to find it through Google searches or in other social media, which does not have any authentication their answers. And somehow they become a victim of fabricated answers, those are far from realities. This caller asked, so he got clarification. But again, if you are a victim of the situation where you do not know, what you do not know, then how can you learn.
Well, What is Sufism?
Sufism means the mystical system of the Sufis. Now here are two major points. One who is “SUFIs” and what does MYSTICAL means.?
Sufi is someone who attempts to be united with God through prayer or you can say that a person who tries to communicate directly with God. Who claims to attain, or believes in the possibility of attaining, insight into mysteries transcending ordinary human knowledge, as by direct communication with the divine or immediate intuition in a state of spiritual ecstasy.
Mystical is relating to the belief that there is hidden meaning in life, and that each human being can unite with God.
A mystic is just someone who tries to establish a direct, unmediated connection with a divine force, usually through spiritual practices or hallucinogenic substances. A mystic is made by knowledge, by the opening out of the way whereby the inner splendor may escape.
Now A Billion Dollar Question: Does Sufism connected with any specific Religion?
The answer is “NO”. But to understand this you should know what religion means?
Religion is a fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a group of people. These set of beliefs concern the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, and involve devotional and ritual observances.
Interestingly, do you know where the word Sufi populated? The word SAF means a carpet. Since the SUFIs meditated upon GOD on a carpet., Sufism took its birth i.e. pure people who meditated on a carpet.
But if you look from an Arabic point of view, the word ‘SUFI’ derives its name from another Arabic word ‘SUF‘, which means wool. The Muslim saints who wore garments of coarse wool began to be called SUFI saints.
Religion can not be a religion, which emphasized the theory of division. Now youths are losing faith on religion because they understood that “Religion unites never divides” (धर्म जोड़ता है तोड़ता नहीं) and if religion favors division means it is not a religion, what it is meant to be.
Sufis rejected outward religiosity and emphasized love and devotion to GOD and compassion towards all fellow human beings. They often rejected the elaborate rituals and codes of behavior demanded by religious scholars. They seek union with GOD.
“नमाज़े हक़ अदा होगी, खुले मैदान में हमदम, हक़ीक़त को जरूरत है, ना मंदिर की ना मस्जिद की“
Sufis are spiritual people. They love the creator, not the creation.
To me, music doesn’t have any discrimination, any demarcation, any boundaries. Music does not create any division among religion, caste, color, creed, and languages. Music understands only one language and that is “LOVE”. Music does not have any specific name, we have given a lot of names to it which creates a lot of differences also. But the truth is music is the only way to transport yourself to another world. It relaxes you and if music, lyrics, and voice combination have great command in any of the performances, you can feel heaven on earth.
I will urge all youngsters, you can not deny the existence of GOD, a universal truth, a supreme power. So rather become religious, be spiritual and be feel connected to GOD through music.
